問題
$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 3}\displaystyle\frac{a\sqrt{x+13}-b}{x-3}=\displaystyle\frac{1}{4}$が成り立つような実数$a$,$b$を求めよ.

解答
$x→3$かつ$(分子)=0$のとき,$(分母)→0$となり,$(左辺)$は$±\infty$に発散するため値が収束しない.よって,$x→3$のとき$(分子)→0$となる必要がある.
$a\sqrt{3+13}-b=0$
$∴ b=4a$
このとき,
$\displaystyle\frac{a\sqrt{x+13}-b}{x-3}=a\displaystyle\frac{(\sqrt{x+13}-4)(\sqrt{x+13}+4)}{(x-3)(\sqrt{x+13}+4)}$
$=a\displaystyle\frac{(\sqrt{x+13})^2-4^2}{(x-3)(\sqrt{x+13}+4)}$
$=a\displaystyle\frac{x-3}{(x-3)(\sqrt{x+13}+4)}$
$=a\displaystyle\frac{1}{\sqrt{x+13}+4}$
よって,
$\displaystyle\lim_{x \to 3}\displaystyle\frac{a\sqrt{x+13}-b}{x-3}=a\displaystyle\frac{1}{\sqrt{3+13}+4}=\displaystyle\frac{a}{8}$
これが$\displaystyle\frac{1}{4}$に収束するので,
$\displaystyle\frac{a}{8}=\displaystyle\frac{1}{4}$
$a=2$,$b=8$ (答)
